NIR Analysis

As the largest chemistry based forage lab in the U.S., we have the resources to generate some of the most extensive NIR calibrations in the industry. As well as providing NIR services at the four CVAS facilities, we support a number of NIR labs in the U.S. and abroad.

Near Infrared Reflectance spectroscopy (NIR) allows for rapid determination of multiple nutrients and characteristics of a feed or forage. It is a fast, cost effective process available for evaluation of most forage types. Given the volume and breadth of chemistry evaluations that CVAS provides, we are able to be a leader in the provision of NIR services.

For a listing of forage applicability and predicted nutrients, you can View the following document

For a listing on non-forage applicability and predicted nutrients, you can View the following document

For a list of feed types appropriate for NIR analysis you can click here.

For an excellent review of the basics of NIR technology, you can view the NIRS White Paper.

CVAS is unique in providing combinations of NIR and chemistry services that are available in certain reporting packages. You can view the listing below for details.

NIR 1 Analysis
The NIR 1 Analysis includes tests for Dry Matter, Moisture, Crude Protein, ADFCP, NDFCP, Soluble Protein, ADF, NDF, Lignin, Starch, Sugar, Fat, Ash, Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Magnesium (Mg), and Potassium (K) and pH on ensiled forage. Calculated values are provided for Available Protein, Adjusted Protein, Degradable Protein, NEl, NEm, NEg (OARDC Summative Energy Equation), NSC and NFC.

NIR 2 Analysis
The NIR 2 is the NIR 1 Analysis with wet chemistry Minerals - Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), and Copper (Cu).

NIR 3 Analysis
The NIR 3 is the NIR 2 Analysis plus wet chemistry on Chloride (Cl), Sulfur (S), and DCAD.

NIR 4 Analysis
The NIR 4 is the NIR 2 Analysis plus wet chemistry on Crude Protein, ADF, and NDF.

NIR 5 Analysis
The NIR 5 is theNIR 1 Analysis plus wet chemistry on Crude Protein, ADF, and NDF.

NIR Plus Option

This option provides additional value. Graphical reporting and our expanded range reports are obtained using the Plus Option. Nutrients added include 12, 30, 120, and 240hr NDF digestibility as well as uNDF values; fermentation values and soluble fiber on ensiled forages; fatty acid values and a determination of amino acid nitrogen as a percentage of total nitrogen; 7hr starch digestibility; and RFQ on forages.

Calibrate LEAF option
The Leaves Enhance Alfalfa Forage (LEAF) test is a Forage Genetics predictive equation to help determine the leaf percentage of alfalfa. Additional information can be found HERE.  To select the Calibrate LEAF option, use this SAMPLE SUBMISSION form or select Calibrate in the NIR Packages section on our pre-labelled bags.

Non Forage Ingredients
Almond hulls, Bakery Waste, Beet Pulp, Brewer Grains, Canola Meal, Corn, Corn Distillers Grains, Corn Gluten Feed, Wheat Midds, Soybean Meals and Small Grains.

Apparent Nutrient Digestibility
Includes a NIR Plus evaluation of a high group TMR and associated fecal matter to generate an evaluation of apparent NDF and starch digestibility.

Manure Package
Provides Dry Matter, Crude Protein, ADF, NDF, Lignin, Starch, Ash, Ca, P, Mg, K

TMR Control - NIR Package

This package includes Dry Matter, Crude Protein, Soluble Protein, ADF, NDF, ADFCP, NDFCP Lignin, Fat, Starch, Sugar, Ash, Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cl, and S. Also included is an evaluation for peNDF, SPS (starch processing score), and the Penn State Particle Size Evaluation.

TMR Mixer Evaluation Package
(Set of 5 samples analyzed to assess mixer efficiency) NIR analysis with chemistry minerals. This package includes Dry Matter, Crude Protein, Soluble Protein, ADF, NDF, ADFCP, NDFCP, Lignin, Fat, Starch, Sugar, Ash, Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cl, and S.

Provides 30 hr NDF Digestibility with Kd rate, an NIR evaluation of fermentation acids (for ensiled forages), as well as a uNDF at 30 hrs, a uNDF at 120 hrs and 240 hrs, total fatty acids, and soluble fiber. This option also includes a soil contamination probability index of low, medium, or high for forages. A nitrate probability is reported as low, medium, or high. For corn silage, the NIR Plus Option provides 12 hr NDF digestibility and 7 hr (4mm) starch digestibility.
